How to Replace a Lost ID Card

If you lose your driver's license or state ID card, it is important to replace it as soon as possible. Criminals can use your misplaced license to commit identity theft, and you can face fines or other legal consequences if you are caught driving without your license.

Instructions

1. File a police report. Police reports on lost or stolen ID cards are mandatory in many states. Even if your state does not require a report, you should do so. Filing a police report protects you against fraud if your ID has fallen into the wrong hands and alerts police in case someone tries to use it.

2. Visit the Department of Motor Vehicles website for your state to find out if you can order a duplicate license online. If your state allows you to do so, enter your information and pay a filing fee of $10 to $20 dollars as of 2010 the Internet. You will receive your license in the mail within three to five days.

3. Go to the Department of Motor Vehicles if required to do so. FiIll out a form requesting a duplicate license. Pay a fee of $10 to $20 as of 2010 to the clerk. You might be able to get your ID immediately. If not, the DMV will issue a temporary paper ID until you get your new ID in the mail.
