Becoming a mechanical engineer isn't easy, but there are many jobs in varied fields available for those with the training. Mechanical engineers apply knowledge of physics, math and various sciences to electronics and machines. You could find yourself working on an airplane one year, a factory the next and robots during a third job. Priming your resume and updating on-the-job training can help your chances of finding a job in mechanical engineering, so you can use the knowledge you gained in school.

1. Create a resume that highlights your engineering experience. Put your work experience before your education on your resume if you've been out of school for at least a year. Be specific about the projects that you've worked on and your role in the projects.

2. Get the experience and take the tests to get to the next pay grade for mechanical engineering. Ask your current boss about getting to the next level if you're employed. This has to be done through work.

3. Ask other mechanical engineers for job tips. Request ideas about where to apply and what companies are hiring. Mechanical engineers know other people in their field in school. You will be able to contact professors and alumni for tips on where to apply.

4. Put your resume on engineer-specific job sites. People looking for mechanical engineers will canvass these sites. You also can browse the sites for open mechanical engineering jobs that fit your abilities.

5. Put your resume on less specific job sites, such as Monster and SnagaJob. You can also search job listings and apply to any that interest you.
