How to Convert a Baby Bed to a Daybed
A number of the cribs available in the mid-price range convert into toddler beds, full-size beds, loveseats or daybeds. The typical 3-in-1 conversion model goes from a crib to a daybed and a full-size bed. Basically, the daybed is made by removing the front side of the crib and putting the mattress in its lowest position. Only cribs that are manufactured as convertible should be used. Making a daybed from a standard, non-converting crib goes against manufacturers' advice as well as that of the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Read and follow the exact conversion instructions provided by the bed's manufacturer in the owner's manual. If you don't have it, call the company and order the manual for your crib model, or go to its website and download the PDF version. Most manufacturers make their product manuals available online.

2
Remove the mattress from the crib.

3
Remove the front side of the crib and the corresponding cross bar by following your instruction manual. This will likely entail using an Allen wrench to remove the machine bolts holding these pieces in place.
-
4
Check all the bolts and screws in the newly converted daybed to make sure they're tight. Don't over-tighten them or use a power tool, as doing so can damage the bed frame.

Tips & Warnings
The Consumer Product Safety Commission warns that you should never "use broken or modified cribs, [because] these cribs are deadly traps... Proper assembly of cribs is paramount. Follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer and make sure that every part is installed correctly." This recommendation holds true for every configuration of a convertible crib.
