How to Seal a Marble Countertop

Modern sealers make sealing a marble countertop hassle-free.

A variety of marble-sealing products are on the market, and they are all applied in virtually the same way. The main difference between the types is that some are water-based sealers and some are petroleum-based sealers. Each one, if applied correctly, will give excellent results. They come in easy-to-apply spray bottles for convenience, and anyone who has a marble countertop can seal it with one or two simple applications.

Things You'll Need

• Soapy dishwater solution
• Clean rags
• Marble sealer

Instructions

1. Remove all countertop appliances, knickknacks and any other objects on top of the countertop.

2. Wash the marble countertop with a soapy water solution and a clean rag to remove any dirt or regular kitchen grease. Rinse and allow to dry completely.

3. Spray on a marble sealer directly from the bottle, and cover the marble countertop thoroughly. Every corner and edge needs to be covered with sealer for complete protection.

4. Allow the sealer to remain on the countertop for 15 to 20 minutes -- time is variable per manufacturer's directions. The sealer needs to sit on and then soak into the marble for best results.

5. Wipe off any excess sealer after the initial soaking period, and allow the countertop to dry. For maximum protection, apply a second sealing coat and wipe off the excess once it has soaked in.

Tips & Warnings

• All sealers will need periodic applications over the lifetime of your countertop. Some are better than others and may last for years after being applied, but eventually, the marble will need to be resealed once again.

• Wear rubber gloves when using any type of marble sealer.
