How to Test a DNS Forwarder

DNS servers help your browser find the website you're seeking.

Domain Name System (DNS) resolution is when a DNS server compares a website to its database to find a matching IP address and connects to that IP address. DNS forwarding is necessary when a local DNS server resolves the domain names it can resolve and forwards the other requests to another DNS server for domain name resolution. To test DNS forwarding, try to browse for a domain name not found on your local DNS server.

Instructions

    • 1

      Open an internet browser.

    • 2

Type the URL of a website that your network has not accessed before into the address bar, such as "www.netsol.com," the website for Network Solutions.

    • 3

Press "Enter." If the browser successfully loads the Network Solutions website, DNS forwarding is working.
