The United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) offers grant opportunities for several housing and community-related needs and projects. Whether the grant is for an individual or an organization, there are certain steps that HUD requires for an award, and it has a process in place that can take several weeks or months to run to completion. It is important that each of these requirements is fulfilled to avoid delays and ensure the best chance at obtaining a HUD grant.

  1. Organizations applying for HUD grant programs

      Obtain a Data Universal Numbers System (DUNS) number by either calling 1-866-705-5711 or visiting the Dun & Bradstreet website at http://fedgov.dnb.com/webform.

      Register with Central Contractor Registration at http://www.ccr.gov.

      Navigate to the grants.gov website, and set up your organization's Authorized Organization Representative (AOR) profile, user name, and password.

      Get your e-business point of contact to log in to grants.gov and confirm you as the AOR.

      Select "Find Grant Opportunities" on the grants.gov website and search for the appropriate grant(s) by keyword, agency, category, or using the more advanced search methods available on the site. Once you have found the desired grant(s), note the CFDA Number or the Funding Opportunity Number.

      Select "Apply for Grants" on the grants.gov website and select "Download Grant Application Package." Enter the appropriate CFDA or Funding Opportunity Number to bring up the correct grant package. Complete the package online, remembering to save as you go. Once you have completed the package and checked it for errors, select "Save and Submit" on the cover page, and note the grants.gov tracking number at the bottom of the screen.

      Track the status of the grant package on the "Track My Application" page on grants.gov.

      Select "Find Grant Opportunities" on the grants.gov website. Find the appropriate grant program (designated as an individual program), and note the Funding Opportunity Number.

      Select "Get Registered" on grants.gov, and select "Individual Registration." Select the "Register with Grants.gov" button.

      Enter the Funding Opportunity Number, and select the "Register" button. Complete the Applicant Registration Form, and select "Continue." Verify that your information is correct, and select "Submit."

      Log in to grants.gov using your user name and password, and select "Apply for Grants." Select "Download Grant Application Package." Enter the appropriate CFDA or Funding Opportunity Number to bring up the correct grant package. Complete the package online, remembering to save as you go. Once you have completed the package and checked it for errors, select "Save and Submit" on the cover page, and note the grants.gov tracking number at the bottom of the screen.
