How to Track GPS Coordinates

GPS systems can track a variety of items.

Tracking coordinates via GPS is used to monitor those under house arrest, as well as to locate stolen cars and cell phones. In order to track GPS coordinates you need either a fixed point, which any GPS system can track, or a GPS transmitter that you can follow with a GPS tracker. Alternatively, if you have a GPS transmitter such as the one found in a cell phone, you may be able to track GPS coordinates through the Internet.

Instructions

1. If you're tracking a cell phone, you'll need the cell phone number for identification. If you're tracking a vehicle or other item with a GPS chip in it, you'll need that chip's tracking information. Many items come with GPS chips in them, and the chip's location will be in the owner's manual. Otherwise, you can buy a GPS transmitting chip from an electronics retailers like Best Buy, or you can buy a chip from a security specialist such as Brick House Security or GPS Central.

2. Input tracking information into your tracker. If you have a dedicated GPS tracking system, such as for a security system that tells you where your property is, you will need to use that system. If you're trying to track an item that doesn't have a dedicated GPS security tracker, like a cell phone, then you'll need to use an Internet tracking sites like The Mobile Tracker, which can track cell phones via GSM technology.

3. Monitor the item you're tracking. This may require entering the tracking information at various intervals, or you might be able to set the item as a destination on your own GPS directional system, depending on what components you have access to.
