With the help of the Internet and the recent boom in popularity of social networking websites, there have never been more tools at your disposal to locate and reconnect with old friends and family.

      Create a profile on Facebook and search for friends and family by name, school they attended or location. Facebook claims to add as many as 300,000 new members every day, so the odds are good that the person you are searching for has a Facebook page. What's more, people can search for you, too, so people you have lost touch with could find you. Keep in mind, however, that while most of your information can be kept private, the fact that you have a profile won't be, so anyone can search for you. If you find someone you were looking for, request that he add you as a friend or send him a message.

      Create a MySpace page and use its search function to search by several categories, including name and past residences. MySpace has taken a back seat to Facebook in recent years, but still has more than 200 million members. If you find someone you were looking for, add him as a friend or send him a message.

Lost Friend Found, Intelius, PeopleSmart and Locate People can search public records and databases to search for your lost friends and family. Most of these let you to make a search for free but charge a subscription fee or per-search fee to see the results, so be sure you know what you are signing up for.

      Hire a private investigator. A lot of a private investigator's work involves tracking down lost acquaintances. They can be quite expensive, though, and may use the same methods described in steps 1 through 3, so be sure you ask what methods they will use and how much they will charge before you hire an investigator.

  • Be careful of what information you put on social networking sites. While it is true that usually only people you have approved to see your profile can see the information, there's no telling who they will allow to view it.
