How to Find the Product Key for XP Professional Registry Editor
If you find yourself having to reinstall XP Professional, without the product key it will be impossible. The product key comes on a sticker attached to the back of the XP Professional's CD or DVD case. If you have lost your disc, you will need to look elsewhere for the product key. The product key is 25 characters, with a mix of numbers and letters. This can easily be found in the registry editor.

Go to your "Start" menu. Click "Run," type "REGEDIT" and press "Enter." This will bring up the registry editor.

Navigate to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE." You should see a plus sign (+). Click the sign to expand the list.

Click "Software." Scroll down until you see "Microsoft" and then select "WindowsCurrentVersion." Look in the right pane that has columns divided by Name, Type and Data. The "Product Id" is your product key.

You can find your Windows XP Professional product key in two locations. Both are located within the registry editor. Alternatively, inside "REGEDIT" go to ""HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE." Follow the same path to expand the list and scroll to "Software." Go to "Microsoft" and this time look for "WinNTCurrentVersion." The product key is listed on the right side pane under "Product Id."
