Install an auto-save program on your computer. Specify where you want the files to save in. This will ensure that if something goes wrong the computer will have saved a backup file of what you've been working on.

2
Search your computer. Type the name of the file you lost into your "search programs and files" box. If no files come up then move on to step 3.

3
Install a file-recovery program. Follow the instructions for the file-recovery software and use it to recover the lost file.

4
Be specific in your search for the file. Search for a Photoshop-specific file. Narrow down the search by clicking on the correct drive. The file-recovery program will usually search the whole computer after it's done searching the specific drive.
