How to Restore a Backup Control File

A backup control file is a copy of an important file. These files give added security to your files; if you accidentally delete one copy of a file, the backup control file will still exist, which you can make copies of. If you accidentally delete or lose a backup control file while transferring it to another computer, for example, you can use a data-recovery program to retrieve the backup control file and restore it to your computer's hard drive.

Instructions

Retrieve your backup control files using the freeware program Restoration, developed by Brian Kato. Download Restoration online and start the program. The program will ask you to select a location to search in; choose your computer's hard drive. Restoration will scan the drive and provide a list of the deleted files it finds. With Restoration, you must restore each file individually by selecting it and clicking "Restore by copying." Repeat this process until you have recovered all the backup control files you want to restore.

Access deleted backup control files with FileRestorePlus, a data-recovery program you can get for free online as a download. Download and install FileRestorePlus and open the program on your computer. Select the "C:/" drive when prompted. The program will generate a list of deleted files it finds on the hard drive. Choose the backup control files you want to recover, and the program will restore them to the hard drive and close out automatically.

Tips & Warnings

  • Save your backup control files on a portable storage device, like an external hard drive, to prevent accidentally deleting them from your internal hard drive.

  • Make sure your computer is plugged in before running a data recovery program so you will have sufficient battery life to recover your files.
