Xbox 360 consoles are manufactured with DVD drives that read game and movie discs. These drives are made by a variety of brands, including Samsung, Hitachi and BenQ. You can "flash" or edit the DVD drive's .BIN firmware in order to run custom code on the console. Disconnect the video and power cables from the rear of the Xbox console, then remove the plastic faceplate. Unclasp the plastic tabs on the outer case and remove the plastic shell from the console. Unscrew the Torx screws on the metal cover and slide the metal case open. Disconnect the SATA cable running from the Xbox 360 to the BenQ DVD drive and connect your SATA cable from the BenQ DVD drive to your computer. Turn on your computer.

Open a web browser and download the Xbox 360 DVD drive flashing program JungleFlasher (see References). As of October 2010, JungleFlasher is the most updated and stable .BIN firmware flashing program available, and it is the only program capable of flashing the DVD drive in Windows (earlier programs required MS-DOS). Run JungleFlasher and click "Flash .BIN to Xbox 360" in the program's main menu. Select your BenQ VAD-6038 DVD drive and check the box marked "Use Firmware Version 1.4." Click "OK" and the program will begin flashing the BenQ DVD drive with 1.4 firmware.

Wait for the flashing process to finish, then close the program and shut down the computer. Disconnect the SATA cable running from the computer to the DVD drive, then reconnect the SATA cable from the Xbox 360 to the DVD drive. Close the metal cover on the console and replace the Torx screws. Replace the plastic outer case on the console, then return the faceplate to its original position. Reconnect the power and video cables before turning the Xbox 360 on again.

Tips & Warnings

  • Opening the Xbox 360 will void the warranty.
