How to Protect Hair Highlights While Surfing

Surfing can certainly help keep your body toned, but it's not that great for your hair. Falling into the water can cause serious knots that can tear and break your hair. The saltwater from the ocean will further dry out your hair, causing your hair to become brittle and break. Excessive days in the sun will also make your color and highlights fade quickly. There are some things that you can do to prevent your highlights from fading and help protect your hair from damage.

Things You'll Need

• UV protection shampoos and conditioners
• Clarifying shampoo
• Leave-in conditioner
• Comb
• Swim cap

Instructions

1. Wash your hair with UV protection shampoos and conditioners every day. These hair care products will not only protect your scalp from getting burned in the sun but also help to prevent your color from fading.

2. Wash your hair with a clarifying shampoo once a week. This will help thoroughly rinse out excess salt and chlorine from within your hair follicles and shafts to further prevent hair-color fading.

3. Apply a leave-in conditioner to your hair just before you head out to the ocean. Comb the conditioner through your hair to ensure even saturation. This will provide a protective barrier between your hair shafts, the saltwater and the sun's rays, preventing your highlights from fading.

4. Wear a swim cap. The swim cap will provide almost complete protection to your hair by preventing both water and sun from penetrating your hair.

5. Rinse your hair right when you get out of the water. Rinsing your hair in cool, nonsaltwater will prevent the excess salt from drying out your tresses, and it will leave your hair shiny and smooth.
