How to Create a Hexagonal Prism

A prism is a many-sided shape with two parallel faces that are congruent with each other. A hexagonal prism has six even sides. You can easily create your own hexagonal prism using paper to use a decoration, toy or a hands-on demonstration for kids. The prism is easy to make by following a simple series of folds and creases. If you have enough patience, you can even teach children to make the prisms themselves.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the square paper in front of you and bring the left vertical edge over to the right vertical edge to fold the paper in half. Press down the crease and make the fold sharp.

    • 2

Bring the lower horizontal edge up to the top horizontal edge and press the fold down to make a folded square. Unfold the paper so the inside of the creases are facing upward.

    • 3

Fold the right vertical edge of the paper so it lines up with the middle vertical crease on the paper. Do the same with the left vertical edge so you have two long vertical folds and then unfold the paper again.

    • 4

Bring the upper left corner of the paper down toward the lower right corner until the paper lines up with the leftmost vertical crease. Fold each of the corners inward lined up with the nearest vertical crease to the corner.

    • 5

Bring the upper and lower left corners over to the middle vertical crease. Do the same for the right corners so both far vertical edges meet in middle of the page.

    • 6

Turn the folded paper over so the vertical fold is on the underside of the paper. Fold the lower horizontal edge up to the upper horizontal edge to fold the paper in half.

    • 7

Unfold the paper so the folded corners are on the underside and fold up the lowest edge again. This time the lower edge should line up with the middle horizontal crease. Do the same for the upper horizontal edge.

    • 8

Slide the lower folded edge of the paper into the pocket of the upper folded edge and push the papers together until the lower part of the paper forms itself into a V shape.

    • 9

Make five more folded shapes in the same way. You should now have six triangular tubes of paper.

    • 10

Stand up two of the paper shapes next to each other and place a small piece of tape of the open ends of the tubes where they touch. Keep taping the shapes to each other until you have a hexagon.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a one-sided patterned paper to create a two-toned design when you finish making your prism folds.

  • Do not rush your folds or your prism will not be even and straight.
