Referencing the identification badge is essential to an accurate Mustang restoration.

Classic Ford Mustangs, or those produced in the 1960s and early 1970s, were assigned a series of numbers to identify the specifications of the car as it left the factory. These numbers, along with the vehicle identification number, were included on an identification badge. When restoring a classic Mustang, the information contained in this badge is vitally important because many of these cars have been modified over the years. Fortunately, it only takes a few seconds to access the identification badge and locate the interior color code.

Instructions

    • 1

      Open the driver's side door.

    • 2

Locate the identification badge on the edge of the door. From 1965 to 1969, the identification badge was a rectangular-shaped metal plate. Starting in 1970, the metal plate was replaced with a sticker.

    • 3

Locate the interior color number on the identification badge. Note that the badge features two rows. The top row of the 1965 to 1969 Mustang contains the color number. It is located under the "TRIM" stamp. If the Mustang features a sticker, the number is noted under the "TRIM" stamp.

Note that most color codes for the 1965 to 1969 Mustang were either a single number or a single letter followed by a number. Staring in 1970, all interior codes featured either two letters or one number followed by one letter.
