How to Make Your Own Straight Mic Stand From Tubing
Whether you need a microphone for a speech, a stage performance or a film shoot, a microphone stand enables you to have your hands free as you present or perform. PVC tubing is a versatile medium that you can use to easily make an inexpensive mic stand with a stable base that is also capable of being adjusted to the height of the user.
Things You'll Need
- Tape measure
- PVC tubing, interior diameter slightly larger than the microphone diameter
- Saw
- PVC adhesive
- 5 T-couplings
- 1 5-way coupling
- 4 elbow couplings
- Funnel
- Sand
- 1 valve coupling
- Marker
Instructions
-
-
1
Cut 12 pieces of 8-inch long PVC tubing, and one piece of 6-inch long PVC tubing.
-
2
Insert a piece of 8-inch-long tubing into all three openings of four of the T-couplings, and secure with PVC adhesive. This will create four large T-shapes.
-
-
3
Connect the pipe coming from the short side of each T-shape into one of the four openings arranged in the form of a cross on the 5-way coupling, and secure with adhesive. The coupling will have four T-shapes extending out from it, creating a square shape with open corners.
-
4
Attach an elbow coupling to each open end of the T-shapes to complete the square shape by joining each T-shape to the two T-shapes adjacent to it and secure with adhesive. This is the base of the microphone stand.
-
5
Place the funnel into the remaining opening in the 5-way coupling and fill the base with sand. This will make the base more stable.
-
6
Insert the 6-inch-long PVC piece into the remaining opening on the 5-way coupling and secure with adhesive.
-
7
Attach the valve coupling to the 6-inch-tube and secure with adhesive, keeping the valve closed. This will prevent sand from leaking.
-
8
Insert approximately 5 feet of the PVC tubing into the remaining opening of the valve, but do not secure with adhesive. Do not worry if the tubing is slightly longer, as you will be cutting the piece later to customize the height.
-
9
Mark the PVC tube at the desired height for the microphone.
-
10
Cut the PVC below this line by a distance equal to half the diameter of the tubing you are using, and insert it back into the opening of the valve coupling.
-
11
Cut off the middle of the top of the final T-coupling, cutting out a slot wide enough for the microphone's cord to fit through along the entire top of the T.
-
12
Place the T-coupling atop the open end of the PVC pipe.
-
13
Insert the microphone into the stand by inserting the cord of the mic down through the slot in the T-coupling, then pushing the microphone back so that the body of the microphone is in the T-coupling.

Tips & Warnings
You can secure the neck and T-coupling, if desired, after cutting to size, or you can leave them unsecured and cut several neck pieces of different lengths to allow you to change the height of the stand.
