How to Compress DVD Movies With DivX
DivX format is a common medium for everything ranging from short video clips to full-length movies. However, especially with longer video clips, these files can be large in size and may see significant slowdown on machines that do not have enough computing power. Using Windows Media Player, though, you can compress DivX videos or DivX files on a DVD to a smaller size. While this will degrade the quality of the video somewhat, it will also allow you to watch movies on slower machines without any slowdown or skipping.

1
Open Windows Media Player.
-
2
Click on "File" and then "Open." Choose the DivX movie you wish to compress from its location on your hard drive. If you try to play a DivX file in Windows Media Player, the program will check to see if you have the proper codec required to run the file. If you do not, Windows Media Player will download it automatically.

3
Click on "Properties" under the "File" option after your DivX video loads. Choose the "Advanced" tab in the "Properties" window and select "DivX MPEG-4 DVD Video Decompressor."
-
4
Choose "Properties" on this same screen. This will open a new window. In the window, you will see a sliding bar. Sliding the bar to the left will shrink the size of the movie file. The more you shrink the file, the more quality the video loses. Choose to compress the video file as much or as little as you want.

Tips & Warnings
To compress a DivX file, you must be using Windows Media Player version 6.4. If you have a later version of Windows Media Player installed, you can access version 6.4 by clicking on the "Run" box in the Start menu and typing "mplayer2" in the box. This will run the appropriate version.
