Metal Edge Preparation for Paint

Metal Edge Preparation for Paint thumbnail
Use a flat file to bevel the edges of the metal to prepare it for paint.

Raw metal edges on newly built items have sharp square edges, residual oil and possible burrs. The process to prepare the edges for painting requires removing any burrs, beveling the edge and removing any oil or dirt. Small metal objects are held either by hand or in a vise to prepare the edges. Large metal objects should be held by hand or prepared in a free-standing position. A metal primer is placed on the prepared metal object once the preparation process is complete.

    • 2

Debur the edges. Wipe over the edges with a wire brush to remove any metal shavings.

    • 3

Place a flat file on a 45-degree angle to the metal edge. File the edge of the metal to create a smooth 45-degree bevel.

    • 4

Wipe off the metal with a soft cloth to remove any metal shavings and dirt.

    • 5

Soak a 2-inch section of the soft cloth with acetone. Wipe the metal surface and edges with acetone to remove any oil. Let the metal surface dry for five minutes and proceed to the painting process.
