Steinberg's Cubase program has been developing audio and MIDI software since the 1980s. With the company's offering of Cubase Studio 5, users can see just how the program has grown.       Double-click the Cubase Studio 5 icon on the desktop to open the program and bring up the project dialogue box. Select "New Project" and "Blank Template" from the options shown. This will bring up the Arrange window, the main window of Cubase.

      Open the "Devices" menu at the top of the screen and select "VST Connections" from the list. This allows the configuration of audio inputs. Find the desired recording device from the given list and under the Device Port column, select the computer's audio card or other desired device. Once the input has been set up, select "OK" to apply changes.

      Select the "Track" menu at the top of the Arrange window and select "New Track." This will open the track dialogue box. Click the "Audio Track" setting and press "OK." A new track will appear unarmed in the arrange window. To arm the track and make it recordable, click once on the "Record" button to the left of the track in the Arrange window.

      Click the "Record" button from the transport---the main controls at the top of the Arrange window, which includes a play button, fast forwarding buttons and the record button. When the recording is finished, press "Stop." The audio is now recorded and ready to be processed.
