How to Use Gmail With Finepix

The FinePix is Fujifilm's line of digital cameras. These cameras come with a wide range of features and at a wide range of prices. But they all have this in common: they all connect to a computer with a standard USB cable. Although FinePix cameras come bundled with software that lets you transfer photos from the camera, when plugged into the computer they act as an external hard drive. This makes it very simple to attach photos to Gmail messages directly from the camera, without having to transfer the images to the computer first.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect the camera to the computer by plugging the small end of the USB cable into the USB port found under the port cover on the camera. Plug the large end into a USB port on your computer.

    • 2

Turn the camera on and set it to viewing mode, which is the green icon with the right-pointing arrow in it.

    • 3

Wait until Windows displays the "Removable Disk" dialog box. Click the "Cancel" button to close this box.

    • 4

Open your Gmail account and click the "Compose mail" button in the left-hand column.

    • 5

Click "Attach a file" near the paper clip icon in the message window.

    • 6

Navigate to your camera's memory in the "Select file(s) to upload by mail.googe.com" dialog box by dropping down the menu. Select "Removable Disk F:" and then "DCIM" and a folder labeled "FUJI" from the menus that appear.

    • 7

Click on the "View menu" icon at the top of the dialog box and then select "Thumbnails." This allows you to see all the images on your camera.

    • 8

Click on the image you want to attach and then click the "Open" button on the dialog box. Gmail will upload the image from your camera.

    • 9

Finish composing your email and click "Send."

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't forget to switch the camera off after you've finished uploading your image. The camera will not go into sleep mode when connected to the computer, and if left in view mode it will drain the batteries in less than an hour.

  • You can use this same procedure to attach video files from your camera to messages you compose in Gmail.

  • When working directly from the camera's memory, be careful not to delete any images.

  • The maximum attachment size in Gmail is 25 meg. Some high-end FinePix cameras can create image files larger than this. If your image file is too big to attach, you'll need to transfer it to your computer and reduce the size in a photo editing program.
