How to Use a Brush Tool to Paint Different Colors in Line Art in Photoshop CS

The Adobe Photoshop Creative Suite software may have the word "photo" as part of its brand name, but you're not restricted to working solely with photographs. The graphics program offers tools for you to create your own digital artwork directly on screen, with paint colors and brushes for original custom electronic art. With a couple of clicks in Photoshop, you're able to create line art in bold, geometric designs or something less flashy, to suit just about any artist's preferences.

Instructions

    • 1

Open Photoshop CS, click the "File" menu and select "New". Type "LineArt" in the "Name" box. Type your preferred dimensions in the "Width" and "Height" boxes, such as "11" and "8.5" for a line art design the size of a piece of copy paper. Pull down the dimensions drop-down boxes and select "inches". Click the "OK" button and the Photoshop workspace opens.

    • 2

Double-click the top-left square of the "Color Picker", which is represented by the two overlapping colored boxes on the bottom of the "Tools" palette. Choose the first paint color for the drawing and click "OK".

    • 3

Click the "Brush" tool, which looks like a paintbrush in the middle of the "Tools" palette. Click the brush selector button on the toolbar at the top of the screen. The button is not labeled, but it is the second from the left, has a small number on it and a drop-down arrow. Select a solid round brush head and slide the "Size" bar down to a small number.

    • 4

Position your cursor on the "LineArt" box and draw part of the design. Notice how the lines are thick and solid.

    • 5

Slide the "Opacity" bar on the top toolbar down to 50 percent, then draw more lines. Notice these lines are semi-transparent. The lower the "Opacity" slider number, the more you can see through the lines.

    • 6

Select a new color from the "Color Picker". Pull down the brush head menu and select a different brush style, such as the #34 speckled brush. Draw more lines on the "LineArt" box, noting how these have a spray-painted/airbrush look rather than the thick lines of the original brush head.

    • 7

Add different line styles and paint colors to the "LineArt" box until satisfied.

    • 8

Click the "File" menu, click "Save As" and save the image.
