Instructions for Use of Marvel Mystery Oil

Instructions for Use of Marvel Mystery Oil thumbnail
Marvel Mystery Oil has a variety of applications in all engines.

Marvel Mystery Oil originated in Chicago, Ill. in 1923. It was designed to clean film and deposits from carburetors, since the gasoline of the day had gone through a substandard refining process. Word of mouth spread the tale of how Marvel Mystery Oil cured a variety of engine ailments, and it found its application during WWII for servicing airplane, tanks and even battleships. Marvel Mystery Oil, still as popular today as it was then, has been used by vehicle owners and truck drivers to enhance performance, gain better gas mileage and clean automotive components.

Instructions

    • 1

Refer to your owner's manual for the capacity of your gas tank in gallons. The formula for adding MMO to the fuel gas tank is 4 ounces for every 10 gallons of fuel. If you have a 20-gallon tank you will need to add 8 ounces of MMO to your full tank. If you have a 10-gallon tank and the gas gauge has reached the half-way mark, you should add 2 ounces. Use a felt pen and draw lines on a measuring cup to record such quantities that you will need.

    • 2

Refer to your owner's manual for the capacity of your oil crankcase in quarts. You can substitute MMO for 10 to 25 percent of your oil. For example, if your crankcase holds 5 quarts, then you can add 1 quart of MMO and 4 quarts of regular engine oil. Wait for a regular oil change interval and buy one quart of MMO to add at that time.

    • 3

Refer to your motorcycle repair manual for the exact capacity of your crankcase and fuel tank. Use the same formula as in Step 2. For instance, a 2.5-gallon motorcycle fuel tank will require 1 ounce of MMO. A motorcycle oil crankcase that holds 2 gallons of oil would require up to 1/2 gallon of MMO.

    • 4

Refer to your owner's repair manual if you own a motorcycle with a 2-cycle engine, and determine the capacity of the tank. You can add up to 25 percent of the contents. Example: for an 8-ounce capacity, 2 ounces of MMO would be required. Wait for a regular oil change or extract the needed amount.

    • 5

Add no more than 16 ounces of MMO to any automatic transmission. For the smaller import vehicles that hold less transmission fluid, 12 ounces would be a safe bet. Drain out enough transmission fluid for the addition of MMO, and then refill with transmission fluid.

    • 6

Refer to your owner's manual if you own a diesel vehicle. Use 4 ounces for every 10 gallons of fuel, and 10 to 25 percent of the oil capacity.

    • 7

Add a cap of MMO to the inlet nozzle of air tools, like air ratchets, nail guns, air drills and sanders, air chisels or any other pneumatic tools. Run the tool, turning it side to side and upside down for a minute. Wipe away the excess.

    • 8

Add 4 ounces to every 10 gallons of fuel that you wish to "stabilize" for winter storage. Shake or agitate the contents every month or so to keep it mixed.

    • 9

Place the vehicle in park or neutral with the emergency brake set. Do not start the engine. Remove either the oil filler cap from the valve cover or the cap from the oil filler draft tube, depending on your vehicle design. Place a funnel in the oil inlet hole. Shake the the MMO container and add the contents according to your formula. Use a long-neck funnel to add the prescribed amount of MMO to your gas tank inlet.

Tips & Warnings

  • Marvel Mystery Oil will lubricate and restore rubber engine hoses and lines. Simply wipe the oil on with a rag. Use MMO to lubricate firearm mechanisms and barrels, or any other component that requires a fine machine oil.

  • Do not add Marvel Mystery Oil to methanol powered vehicles--the chemicals are not compatible.
