How to Remove Old Porcelain Tub Stains

Porcelain enamel has long been an effective material used to make bathtubs, with a glass layer fused to a metal base. This creates a durable and hard surface. The surface is acid-resistant, although not acid-proof. Harsh abrasives can scratch and damage the surface, allowing stains to settle in the markings. Removing stains from old porcelain tubs is not difficult.

Things You'll Need

• Sponge
• Mild, non-abrasive detergent
• Baking soda
• Commercial bathroom cleaner
• Chlorine bleach or hydrogen peroxide
• Household ammonia
• Whiting
• Commercial rust remover

Instructions

1. Clean your bathtub at least once a week to prevent stains on the surface of the porcelain enamel. Use a mild, non-abrasive detergent and a damp sponge. Baking soda and water also make an effective cleaner that will not scratch the porcelain. Rinse with clear water.

2. Remove stains and soap scum with a commercial bathtub cleaning product; follow the directions on the container for the best results. Some require you to allow the solution to sit for a few minutes and others may be wiped off immediately.

3. Dilute equal parts of chlorine bleach and water to remove any stubborn stains. You can substitute hydrogen peroxide for the bleach. Do not allow it to sit on the stain for more than a few seconds before removing it with a sponge or cleaning cloth. Rinse the area well with clear water.

4. Mix together a thick paste of regular household ammonia and whiting (calcium carbonate). Let the paste sit for one hour and then wash it off with a solution of soapy water. Rinse with clear water.

5. Remove unsightly brown rust stains from the porcelain enamel with a commercial rust remover. Follow the directions on the container. (see ref 2)

Tips & Warnings

• Never mix chlorine bleach with another cleaner. This can create toxic fumes.
