How to Tie Bait Holder Hooks
Bait holder hooks are used by both freshwater and saltwater anglers to present a wide range of natural baits including corn, worms, crickets and salamanders. Designed to securely hold natural baits in place, bait holder hooks feature a long shank with two or more barbs on the shank to anchor the bait. The eye is commonly angled forward toward the gap of the hook. Bait holder hooks are available in a smaller size 2 through a large size 6/0.

1
Position a bait holder hook so that the eye is easily accessible. Hold the end of the fishing line in your other hand.
-
2
Connect the bait holder hook to the fishing line with a Palomar knot. Feed the end of the fishing line through the eye of the bait holder hook. Pull several inches of the line through the bait holder hook eye.

3
Turn the free end of the fishing line back and through the hook eye the same way it originally passed through. Arrange the line so that you have a loop on one side of the hook eye and a double line on the other.
-
4
Tie an overhand knot with the loop and doubled line but do not snug the knot down at this time. Pull the loop down and around the bend of the bait holder hook.
-
5
Moisten the hook with water or saliva. Hold the hook with one hand and the line above the hook with the other. Slowly pull the Palomar knot down tight against the eye of the hook. Trim excess line from the knot with a sharp pair of scissors.
