How to Become a Virtual Call Center Agent

Virtual call centers are changing the way many companies provide over-the-phone customer service. Virtual call center agents can make money per call they take, per minute they talk, per hour they work, or by commission. They work on a set schedule in a quiet home environment. They are responsible for taking care of their own office equipment (computer, phone, headset) and providing their own high-speed Internet access and land-based phone lines. Additionally, they must know how to use basic office software.

Instructions

1. Visit work-at-home websites to find current job postings for virtual call center companies. Many virtual call center companies exist, such as LiveOps, West at Home, and VIPDesk.

2. Fill out the online application for the posting that interests you, and submit your resume if it is requested.

3. Complete the skills test required for the position for which you are applying. It may cover computer knowledge and customer service skills. You may also have to complete a voice audition so the hiring company can get an idea of how you would sound answering a customer call.

4. Complete the telephone interview. Read up on what is going on in the industries of the call center's clients. Prepare answers to common interview questions like "Tell me about yourself," and "What are your greatest strengths/weaknesses?" You will probably be asked some situation-based questions as well, such as "What would you do if a client's customer asked you. . .?"

5. Complete the company's training. Fill out and submit any remaining paperwork the company needs from you when you accept a position.
