Instructions

    • 1

Gather as many of your personal financial documents as you can find, including utility bills, rent check receipts, mortgage receipts and credit card statements. Use those documents to create a list of major spending categories. It is helpful if your credit card company provides a detailed list of spending by category, otherwise you can create that list on your own.

    • 2

Download a personal budget template from Microsoft. It is a good idea to download several templates so you can choose the one that best meets your needs. Each budget template should have sections for major spending categories like utilities, rent and mortgage, food and dining, transportation expenses and entertainment.

    • 3

Replace any categories you do not expect to use with others from the list you compiled. Insert any other expenses not covered by the budget template.

    • 4

Review your checkbook, credit card statements and other financial documents to get a ballpark figure of how much you are spending in each category. If your utility bills vary month to month, use an average figure.

    • 5

Enter your income information in the relevant sections of the budget template. Don't forget to include income from a second job, or money from freelancing and odd jobs.

    • 6

Save the budget you created for the current month, and use that budget as the template going forward. Create a separate document for each month and review the results carefully. Look for opportunities to trim your spending in certain categories and find extra money to save.
