How to Find a Job As a Forest Ranger

How to Find a Job As a Forest Ranger thumbnail
Forest rangers may be responsible for hundreds of acres of land.

Forest rangers provide a service to the community by preserving forests, particularly in state and national parks. They monitor the parks for damage, educate the public about conservation and the environment and assist regular law enforcement officers in carrying out local, state and federal regulations within forest limits. The work of forest rangers is physically strenuous, and many rangers work in isolation for long periods, but the job still is appealing and fulfilling to some people because of the chance to be in and care for nature.

Instructions

    • 1

Obtain a bachelor's degree in environmental science or a related field. Most forest ranger positions require a minimum of such a degree; a master's degree will give you an edge over the competition. Alternately, complete at least three years in environmental conservation or park operations. Study topics like ecology, forestry, botany and zoology.

    • 2

Complete the civil service exam and other training--for example, firearms instruction--required for park rangers. Requirements will vary slightly depending on the park in which you want to work.

    • 3

Become a member of ranger organizations such as the Association of National Park Rangers, National Park Service, American Forests and National Recreation and Park Association. Network through these organizations to find out about upcoming positions. The website for your state, as well as your state's Department of Environmental Conservation, also should list state jobs, including those in forestry.

    • 4

Volunteer or get a job working in your local park or nature preserve. You can list this in your work experience.

    • 5

Visit the websites for the organizations you joined in Step 3, or read their weekly, monthly and yearly publications for job postings.

    • 6

Update your resume and apply to the forest ranger jobs that interest you.
