How to Remove the Hull From Raw Peanuts

How to Remove the Hull From Raw Peanuts thumbnail
Crack open a peanut shell to enjoy a healthy snack.

When consumed in moderation, raw peanuts are a healthy snack loaded with nutrients like vitamin E and iron. The nuts are protected by a hard shell that must be removed before eating. Fortunately, a little elbow grease is often all you need to break open the hull and access the nuts inside. Some people may prefer to remove the brittle skin surrounding the nuts as well. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Place a single peanut in your dominant hand. Turn the nut so that the vertical seam on the hull is facing up.

    • 2

Press down on the seam with your thumb until the shell cracks. Use both hands to squeeze the nut if the hull proves difficult to break.

    • 3

Peel away the pieces of the hull with your fingers. Do not break apart the peanut inside. Flake off the skin that surrounds the peanuts if desired.

Tips & Warnings

  • Soak the peanuts in warm water for at least thirty minutes if the hull is too difficult to crack. Soaking the nuts will soften their shells.

  • Wear rubber gloves to prevent blisters that may develop from repeatedly applying pressure to the same area of your thumb.
