There are many reasons that an individual may need to apply for a lost title, and one the most common is to be able to change ownership of a vehicle. Another common reason to apply for a new title is when you move from one state to another. Applying for a lost vehicle title in the State of Texas does not have to be a complicated process.

      Download the Application for a Certified Copy of Title from the Texas Department of Transportation website. If you do not have access to the Internet, you may pick up a copy of the form at the closest vehicle titles and registration regional office.

      Gather relevant information from your vehicle. You will need your vehicle identification number, also known as VIN, in addition to your license plate number and the year and make of your vehicle. VIN numbers can commonly be found on the driver's side dash, viewable from the outside of the vehicle.

      Complete the Application for a Certified Copy of Title using the information gathered. Fill in the vehicle year, make of vehicle, license plate number and VIN. Identify the person who will receive the title. Print and sign the application, and include a copy of a current photo identification for each individual who signs it.

      Pay for the processing fee and either mail or drop off your application form to the nearest vehicle titles and registration regional office. The cost is $2 if sent by mail and $5.45 if submitted in person, according to the application. Please note, fees are not refundable and cash is not accepted.

Tips & Warnings

  • If there is a lien on the vehicle, the lien holder must be the one to complete the Application for a Certified Copy of Title.
