Open Source Zip Password Recovery

If you're locked out of your ZIP file, downloading open source password cracking software might help.

Losing the password to your ZIP files is not only frustrating, it can be costly, too. If you cannot remember the password, the only way to retrieve it is by downloading a password recovery program that uses either the "dictionary" method of finding passwords by trying to find a match to common passwords, or the "brute force" method, which attempts to run all possible combinations and locate the right one for your password. For the safety of your computer, you may want to consider using open source software for recovering your ZIP password.

Instructions

1. Download the open source zip password recovery program of your choice. A few options include FCrackZip, PicoZip and Advanced Archive Password Recovery (see Resources).

2. Click "Save." Open the file and click "Install."

3. Open the program. Select your ZIP file from the options on the menu and click "Recover." Be prepared to give the program a few hours to recover your password, particularly if it was long or complex.
