How to Fix the Scanner on a Lexmark 4550

The scanner included on the top end of the Lexmark X4550 all-in-one printer lets you make digital copies of any paper documents or photographs you have at home or in the office. The scanner may not properly transfer the digital image to your computer's hard drive if there is a hardware problem, such as a loose USB cable or dusty scanning glass. Fixing the scanner consists of troubleshooting any hardware issues and downloading the most recent driver software available.

Click the download link for the latest driver for your operating system. Locate the folder where the file is downloaded, and double-click the executable file.

Follow the driver installation directions on the screen. Plug in the Lexmark's USB cable, and press the power button. Open the plastic scanning lid at the top end of the all-in-one machine. Wipe the scanning glass gently from left to right with a soft cloth to clean off any dust streaks.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your computer freezes during the scanning process, or the scan takes an exceedingly long time to complete, your computer may not be able to handle scanning at the highest resolution. Open the Lexmark Imaging Studio software, and click the "Scan" button. Select the "Custom Scanning" option, and choose a lower resolution than the current setting.
