How to Reset a Password for Hard Drive Dell 6000 Service Tag GB71
The BIOS menu installed on your Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop includes several extra security features beyond the standard Windows user name and password. One of those extra features is a user hard drive password that must be entered correctly before the laptop will load the operating system. There may come a time when you need to reset or remove the hard drive password, which is done through the BIOS menu.

Press and hold the Inspiron 6000's power button for five seconds to shut off the laptop completely. Tap the power button again to start the laptop's boot-up procedure.

Hit the keyboard's "F2" key as soon as the blue, Dell manufacturer logo appears on the LCD screen during the boot-up process. Restart the laptop again if you miss the window of opportunity to hit "F2" before the Dell logo disappears and the hard drive password prompt appears.

Type the laptop's BIOS password, if you use one, and tap "Enter." Scroll over to the heading named "Security" using the right arrow key.

Hit the down arrow key to scroll down to the option labeled "Change User Password." Press "Enter" to bring up the existing user password screen.

Enter the current user hard drive password in the text field and tap "Enter" to access the next window for choosing a new password. Hit "Enter" while leaving the field blank to remove the password, or type a new password and hit "Enter" to choose a new password instead.

Scroll back up to the "Security" heading and use the right arrow key to highlight the "Exit" option. Navigate down to the "Save Changes and Exit" option and press "Enter" twice to restart the Inspiron laptop.

Tips & Warnings
It's not possible for a user to manually reset the hard drive password without having the current password. Call Dell's customer support directly for help in removing the hard drive lock if you have forgotten the password.
