How to Apply for a Gun License in New Jersey
If you plan to buy a gun in the state of New Jersey, you must first obtain and submit an "Application for Firearms Purchaser Identification Card and/or Handgun Purchase Permit". If this is your first time buying a handgun, you must apply for both the identification card and purchase permit. Keep in mind that in order to be approved to purchase a handgun, a background check will be run against you, as well as a mental health check.

Download and fill out the Form STS-33 "Application for Firearms Purchaser Identification Card and/or Handgun Purchase Permit" (Ref 4).

Download and fill out the Form SP-66 "Consent for Mental Health Records Search" (Ref 5).

Obtain a money order in the amount of $60.25 payable to the State Police of New Jersey. This is needed to run a background check. You may not pay this amount using a check. Obtain a separate money order in the amount of $5.00 payable to your local police department. This is needed for your Firearms ID chart. You can also use a check for the $5.00 fee. Obtain a separate money order in the amount of $2.00 payable to your local police department. This is needed for the gun purchase permit. You can also use a check for the $2.00 fee.
