How to Clean a GM Mass Air Flow Sensor

How to Clean a GM Mass Air Flow Sensor thumbnail
Regular cleaning of your mass air flow sensor increases performance and efficiency.

A mass air flow (MAF) sensor monitors the air flow on fuel-injected vehicles. It works by sending a constant voltage over two heated wires on the sensor. The wires cool down as the air flows across them, creating a temperature change. This information is sent to the computer and is used to calculate the airflow. Over time, these tiny wires accumulate dirt and grime and need cleaning. Regular cleaning will improve your vehicle's performance and fuel economy.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Open the hood. Locate the mass air flow sensor between the air box and the intake manifold.

    • 2

Pull up on the wiring plug clip with your finger and pull back and forth on the plug to remove the wiring plug from the sensor. Do not pull on the wires.

    • 3

Remove the torx head bolts holding the sensor to the housing using a T27-sized bit and driver. Some models use a safety-type head with a pin in the center. Gently pull the sensor directly away from the housing while paying close attention not to damage the delicate platinum wires on the end.

    • 4

Spray MAF cleaner or electronic contact cleaner directly on the wires. Allow the sensor wires to air dry completely. Do not wipe off the sensors or you may damage them.

    • 5

Reinstall the sensor in the air box and plug in the harness. Drive the vehicle to test the results of the MAF cleaning.
