Repair Windows XP with the XP setup CD

The repair function in Windows XP may be used to restore the system files to their original state. If you are having problems with Windows XP, the repair function may be used instead of formatting the computer. If you repair your computer, no programs or data is changed. You repair Windows XP using Windows XP setup CD.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the Windows XP Setup CD and click "Start," "Turn off Computer" and "Restart." When the "Welcome to Setup screen appears, press "Enter" to set up Windows XP.

    • 2

Accept the license agreement and Windows will search for previous Windows installations. A list of Windows installations will be displayed.

    • 3

Select the installation you want to repair and press "R." It will go through the repair process automatically. Be patient as this takes some time to complete. When it is finished, your computer will automatically restart and you will be at the normal startup screen.

Tips & Warnings

  • Reapply any Windows updates and service pack updates received since the Windows XP installation. They are available from the Microsoft website.

  • Back up your computer before you repair it. If something goes wrong you could lose your data.
