In the state of New Jersey, any license plate in the alphanumeric range of AL1000 to AL9999 belongs to a member of the American Legion. A nonprofit, nonpartisan organization, the American Legion was started in 1919 by Congress and is a patriotic veterans group that is recognized for community outreach and charitable services. Any member of the American Legion may obtain a New Jersey personalized license plate from the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission.

      If your post's license plate coordinator approves your request, mail an organizational license plate request to NJ Motor Vehicle Commission, Special Plate Unit, 2W, 225 E. State St., Trenton, NJ 08666. The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission will mail you an application for the organizational license plate.
