How to Determine the Weight of a Steel Bar

While you can place a steel bar on a scale to determine its weight, you can also do so with a mathematical formula. The formula will not give the most precise weight available; you would have to use a scale for that. However, it will give you a general idea of how much the steel bar weighs.

Things You'll Need

• Measuring tape
• Paper and pencil

Instructions

1. Measure the steel bar's thickness and write that number down in inches.

2. Measure the steel bar's length and write that number down in inches.

3. Multiply the thickness by the length and multiply that number by 3.40. The equation should look like this: "Thickness x Length x 3.40 = Weight in lbs. per foot."

4. Multiply the weight per foot by the number of feet long the steel bar is to get the total weight. The equation should look like this: "Weight per foot x Length in feet = Total weight."
