How to Save Embedded Flash Movies

Many popular video websites like YouTube.com now use Flash formats such as .FLV and .SWF files to stream videos on the Internet. There are several third party software applications that allow you to download and save Flash movies to your computer, but you can easily save Flash videos to your PC with your web browser program.

Instructions

  1. Saving Flash Movies in Firefox

      Open Firefox, then go to a webpage that has a Flash video you want to save to your computer. Right-click on an open area of the page, then click "View Page Info." Alternatively, click the "Tool" option on the menu bar and then "Page Info."

      Click the "Media" icon tab at the top of the pop-up window. The "Media" windows displays a list of embedded media files on the current webpage.

      Scroll through the list until you come to a media file with a ".FLV" or ".SWF" file extension.

      Click to highlight the Flash video file, then click the "Save As" button at the bottom of the window. Enter a descriptive file name for the video, browse to the folder on your computer where you want to save the file, and click the "OK" button.

      Wait for Firefox to download the video and save it in the folder you chose.

    Instructions for Google Chrome or Internet Explorer

      Open Internet Explorer and go to a webpage that has a Flash video.

      Click "Tools" on the menu bar, then click "Internet Options."

      Click the "General" tab in the "Internet Options" window. Click the "Settings" button underneath the "Temporary Internet Files" label. Finally, click "View Files."

      Scroll through the list of files until you come to a file listed in the ".FLV" or ".SWF" format. Right-click on the file name, then click "Copy" on the pop-up menu.

      Click "Start" on the Windows taskbar, then click "Computer" or "My Computer." Browse to the folder where you want to save the file. Right-click anywhere in the folder window, then click "Paste" on the pop-up menu. Windows saves the Flash video file to that folder.

Tips & Warnings

  • In order to play download Flash movies, you will need to download the Adobe Flash Player or add a codec to your current media player to enable support for FLV or SWF files.
