How to Shift Gears on a Honda Motorcycle

Shifting on a motorcycle is otherwise very similar to shifting gears in an automobile with manual transmission. Some Honda motorcycles have a light on the handlebar assembly that indicates when the cyclist should shift to a higher or lower gear. Make sure your bike is in the correct gear for your speed and the grade of incline to keep your bike from stalling.

Instructions

    • 1

Close the throttle by releasing your hold on the right handlebar grip and letting it rotate to a complete stop.

    • 2

Pull in the clutch, a metal lever located in front of the right handlebar handle. Hold the clutch in the entire time you are switching the gears.

    • 3

Hook your left foot under the transmission bar, located in front of the bike's left foot rest. Pull up in a smooth motion to shift up to the desired gear. Neutral is half a click above first gear, and the subsequent gears are located above neutral.

    • 4

Release the clutch smoothly while gradually increasing the throttle to complete the gear shift.
