Instructions

    • 1

Cut the shape for the main patch piece out of cardboard. This could be a simple square or a more complex shape, such your initials.

    • 2

Select the fabric to make the patch; this can be a piece of vintage cloth from an old dress or curtains, a soft fabric such as satin, or a piece of organza or lace.

    • 3

Trace the cardboard cutout onto the piece of fabric. Cut out the shape.

    • 4

Trace the cardboard cut out onto the adhesive, iron-on backing paper and cut out the shape.

    • 5

Add details to the basic shape of the patch. For example, if you are creating a patch in the shape of your initials, add another layer of fabric. Draw a smaller version of the letters out of cardboard, small enough to fit inside the first version.

    • 6

Cut out the shape and trace it onto a different piece of fabric. Cut the shape from fabric. Choose a different material or different color to show contrast. Use fabric glue to adhere the smaller letters to the center of the larger piece. You should be able to see the original fabric popping out from behind this new piece.

    • 7

Create a third layer of fabric for additional color and texture on the patch, if desired.

    • 8

Adhere the patch to the article of clothing by following the instructions on the iron-on adhesive paper. You will layer the fabric on top of the cut-out paper and fuse the two together, then fuse to the garment.

    • 9

Add additional touches to the patch once it is adhered to the garment. You cannot add them prior because the heat of the iron could damage the embellishments. Use a hot glue gun to add decorative elements like beads, plastic gemstones, sequins or even buttons. Fill in or outline the letters with these decorative touches to add a finishing touch to the patch.
