Where Do I Locate the AC Relay on a 1996 Toyota Avalon?
Relays regulate the amount of electricity that makes it to the component that is on the circuit they control. These relays prevent too much electricity from getting to the component and burning it out, otherwise known as power surges. When a relay goes bad, you need to replace it, much the same way you would replace a fuse. Relay blocks are located in several different places in your car, depending on the make and model of your automobile.

1
Open the engine compartment and disconnect the negative battery terminal using a wrench to loosen the nut. Locate the relay block. The relay block is on the driver's side of the car, just in front of the strut tower on the fender well of the car.

2
Unsnap the cover of the relay box and pull it open. Locate the AC relay. The relays have labels that are on the block itself. In some cars, the labels are inside the cover.

3
Grasp the AC relay firmly and remove it from the relay block by pulling it straight out.
-
4
Put the new relay in place and push it in firmly, seating it flush against the surface. Snap the cover back into place and reconnect the negative battery terminal. Tighten the nut with a wrench.
