How to Put an Alternator Belt on a 1999 Bravada

How to Put an Alternator Belt on a 1999 Bravada thumbnail
The Oldsmobile Bravada has a serpentine drivebelt.

The alternator pulley on your 1999 Oldsmobile Bravada is part of the serpentine drivebelt system. This belt runs the alternator, power steering pump, water pump and air conditioning compressor. When the belt snaps, none of these components will function properly. Checking the serpentine belt every 30,000 miles for signs of cracking or separating material on the ridges of the belt will give you the opportunity to change the belt before it fails.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the hood of the vehicle and remove the battery cable from the negative terminal.

    • 2

Rotate the serpentine belt tensioner counterclockwise to relieve the tension in the serpentine belt. This model of vehicle has a drivebelt tensioner rather than a pulley tensioner bolt.

    • 3

Look on the radiator shroud for a serpentine routing decal. If the decal has been removed from the radiator shroud, draw a diagram of the serpentine belt routing.

    • 4

Remove the serpentine belt from the pulley system.

    • 5

Install the new serpentine belt according to the diagram.

    • 6

Place a pry bar on the opposite side of the alternator from the pulley tensioner assembly. Pull back on the pry bar while turning the tensioner bolt clockwise to tighten the belt.
