Laptop screen malfunctions are caused by a wide range of issues. However, LCD screen failure is most commonly linked to issues with the inverter board. The inverter board is a small circuit board attached to the screen. It transfers power to the backlight from the motherboard. The backlight is a small light bulb inside the screen that illuminates the screen. Replacing the inverter board requires that you completely dismantle the display panel.

    • 1

      Shut down your Gateway laptop. Disconnect the power cable from its socket. Then disconnect and remove all external devices connected to the laptop. Remove the battery pack from its compartment on the bottom casing of your laptop.

      Open the display panel. Remove the rubber screw covers from the display panel's front cover with a small flat-head screwdriver.

      Remove the Phillips-head screws from the front cover. Remove the front cover from the display panel with your finger tips. Set it aside close by.

      Locate the inverter board inside the bottom edge of the display panel just below the LCD screen. Disconnect the cables from each side of the inverter. Remove any materials securing the inverter to the display panel. This will either be adhesive tape or a few Phillips-head screws. Remove the old inverter board from the laptop.

      Place the new inverter board inside the compartment just below the LCD screen. Replace any tape or Phillips-head screws as necessary. Reconnect the cables to each side of the inverter board.

      Replace the display panel's front cover. Fasten the front cover to the display assembly with the Phillips-head screws you removed. Replace the rubber screw covers to the front cover.

      Replace the battery pack and then reconnect all cables and devices to the laptop.

  • Disassembling your Gateway laptop may void the manufacturer's warranty. Be sure to check your warranty before performing this procedure. If you are concerned about voiding your warranty, take your laptop to the repair shop for professional service.
