To get Social Security Disability Insurance and other government benefits and services, you'll need to provide your Social Security Number (SSN). If you currently do not have an SSN and need to apply for a Social Security card in Akron, Ohio, you can obtain one free of charge within seven to 14 days from the date of your application. Depending on your preference, you may file for a Social Security card either by mail or in person at one of two Social Security Administration (SSA) offices in Akron, Ohio.

      Obtain an application for a Social Security card. Go to SSA's website, download the application packet and print it out, Or, call SSA's hotline Monday through Friday at 800-772-1213 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., EST and ask that an application be mailed to you.

      Locate original documents that prove your age, identity and citizenship or immigration status in the United States. Use your birth certificate or passport to prove your age and a state-issued driver's license or I.D. card to establish your identity. You may also use your U.S. passport or U.S. birth certificate to establish your citizenship status; if you are not a citizen, you must show the SSA documentation of your immigration status such as a visa, work permit or foreign-issued passport. Notify the SSA at the 800 number if you cannot produce a particular piece of documentation.

      Review the information on how to fill out the application on page 3 of the packet. Complete the application form on page 5 of the packet. Print in blue or black ink, sign and date the application at the bottom of the page.

      Find your local SSA office in Akron, Ohio. There are two offices in Akron--one located in Akron Downtown and the other located in Akron West; the addresses are on the Social Security Offices website or as follows:

      Mail your completed application and supporting documents to the office you have selected. Or, submit your application in person during hours of operation. Office hours for both locations are Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., EST. You should receive your new Social Security card at the address you've provided within seven to 14 days of your application date.
