Scotchgard Couch Cleanings

Scotchgard is a fabric protectant designed to prevent spills from settling into carpeting and upholstery. Scotchgard is a paraffin-based chemical that uses its waxy substance to repel stains long enough for you to clean them up. While Scotchgard is not a cure-all for preventing couch damage and should not be treated as such, it can help maintain your couch against wear and tear for a longer period of time. Cleaning a couch that has had Scotchgard protection applied is a simple process. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Vacuum the couch regularly to pick up crumbs, dust and any loose debris. The Scotchgard will make vacuuming more effective since it helps keep the dirt from sinking deeper into the fabric.

    • 2

Blot up any spills with a paper towel or soft rag as soon as possible to prevent the stain from setting. The Scotchgard will keep the liquid on the surface of the fabric for an extended period of time to allow easier cleaning, but a delay in cleaning could still result in fabric damage or discoloration.

    • 3

Spray a solution of water and white vinegar onto any stains or dirty areas in a 3 to 1 mixture. The white vinegar is a strong cleaning agent and natural deodorizer that will not damage the Scotchgard or the fabric. Let the solution set for a moment, and then pick it up with a paper towel or rag.

    • 4

Steam clean the couch every 1 to 2 years with a steam-cleaning machine, and have Scotchgard reapplied to the couch after every two to three steam cleanings.
