How to Install a Pull Cord for a Lawn Boy Push Mower

Lawn Boy is a well-known brand of walk-behind lawn mowers, known by their light-green color. The engine on a Lawn Boy mower is started by a pull cord that recoils back into the engine housing after each pull. With normal wear and tear, eventually the pull cord can become damaged and break. A broken pull cord can be replaced with a new one in a few minutes using only some basic hand tools. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Pull on the black rubber boot that covers the spark plug to disconnect the spark plug wire from the spark plug.

    • 2

Remove the screws that hold the starter housing to the top of the engine with a Phillips screwdriver. Lift the housing off of the engine, and place it upside down on a work table.

    • 3

Hold the housing securely with one hand, and rotate the pulley in the center of the housing counter-clockwise until the pulley stops turning. Clamp the pulley into place with a pair of wide-jaw vise grip pliers.

    • 4

Pull on the knot in the knot hole near the center with a pair of needle-nose pliers and remove the broken section of cord.

    • 5

Insert the end of the new pull cord, with the handle attached to the other end, into the hole in the starter housing, guiding the cord into the pulley toward the knot hole near the center of the pulley. When the cord appears in the knot hole, grasp it with needle-nose pliers and pull out about a foot of slack.

    • 6

Tie a knot in the exposed end of the cord. Singe the remaining end of the cord with a lit match to prevent the cord from fraying.

    • 7

Pull on the cord from outside the starter housing to seat the cord firmly in the knot hole.

    • 8

Release the wide-jaw vise grip pliers, allowing the spring-loaded pulley to rewind the cord around the pulley.

    • 9

Re-attach the starter housing onto the top of the engine, and secure it by reinstalling the screws. Reconnect the spark plug wire to the spark plug.

Tips & Warnings

  • For long life, use only a Lawn Boy-approved pull cord in your Lawn Boy mower.

  • To keep the engine from accidentally firing, always disconnect the spark plug wire from the spark plug before beginning work on any small engine.
