How to Keep Extensions From Falling Out

Hair extensions bond temporarily with your real hair, giving you a longer or fuller hairstyle than you would have otherwise. In time, your natural hair grows, and you must reposition the extensions on the hair shaft. No matter what type of extension bond you have -- glued, fusion, weft, microbead or clip-in -- you must give the bonds special care to keep them looking nice. If professionally applied, human hair extensions will stay in place for three to four months -- as long as you care for them properly.

Step 1

Protect your hair extensions at night by pulling your hair back in a fabric-covered ponytail holder before you go to bed. Loosely braid the hair or pull it back in a low ponytail. If you have glued-in extensions, cinch the hair below the bonds.

Step 2

Wash hair extensions using only the products recommended by your stylist. Wet the hair, then gently rub shampoo into the scalp with your fingers. Work the shampoo down into the remainder of the hair. Rinse the hair standing under a shower head. Do not flip your hair upside down, which can cause the extensions to tangle.

Step 3

Apply conditioner to the hair just below the bonds and all the way to the tips. Never rub conditioner or any type of oil on the hair bonds. This can cause your extensions to fall out. Rinse out the conditioner with warm water.

Step 4

Squeeze the water from your hair without rubbing, which can dislodge the extensions. Use a towel to press the water from your hair extensions.

Step 5

Spray the bottom portion of your hair with a detangling product. Use a wide-tooth comb to remove tangles and snarls. Allow the hair to air dry or blow dry it. If you opt for blow drying, keep the heat directed away from the bonds.

Step 6

Brush your hair with one hand while holding the hair at the bonded area with the other. This will take the pressure off the bonds while you work the tangles from your hair and get the style you want.
