Cell phones in the classroom can be a real problem.

Educators today are faced with many challenges. In addition to actually teaching the curriculum, educators must first create a classroom environment that allows for optimum learning to take place, plan lessons that address the individual learning styles of each student, and consider the unique backgrounds of each student. This is not an easy job! Although many teachers are finding technology in the classroom to be beneficial, it can sometimes interrupt and hinder student learning. Cell phones fall into this category. There are specific actions to take to stop this problem.

Instructions

  1. Establish Clear Expectations and Consequences

    • 1

Take time at the beginning of each school year, quarter, or semester to establish clear expectations regarding cell phone use in the classroom. Keep them specific and limit to three to five expectations.

      Example:

      1. Cell phone use in not permitted in this classroom.

      2. Cell phones must be off when you walk in the door.

      3. Cell phones must remain hidden in pockets or backpacks during class.

    • 2

Establish and review with students the consequences that will occur if expectations are not met. Consequences should follow a concise sequence and should be promptly and fairly given when an expectation has been neglected.

      Example:

      1. Verbal warning.

      2. Extra 5 minutes after class to conference with teacher.

      3. Phone call to parents.

      4. If problem is still not resolved, student will be sent to the principal.

    • 3

Make a poster with expectations and consequences clearly written and post in classroom for students and teacher to reference often.

Tips & Warnings

  • Many schools are attacking this problem at a school-wide or district-wide level. Talk to your building administrator about establishing school-wide expectations regarding cell phone use. It is always easier to enforce rules that are supported and enforced throughout the school, as opposed to your classroom only. The school board can also help to establish district-wide expectations regarding cell phone use on campus and in the classrooms.

If all kids had kajeet phones talking on them during class wouldn't be an issue! Free parental controls allow us to set when and when the phone can't be used. We've restricted it during school hours and after bedtime. We will never get a call from the school about our kid's phones! I have a coupon for 15% off any kajeet phone. Use promo code: 1115
