Purchase credits to offset carbon emissions from your car.

Carbon emissions are a key contributor to global climate change. Transportation accounts for about one-third of 5.8 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions, according to the U.S. Energy Department. Purchase carbon offsets --- investments in renewable energy projects such as wind farms or reforestation efforts --- to balance the emissions from your car trips.

Instructions

  1. Buying Carbon Offsets

    • 1

Calculate your car's annual carbon footprint. Online calculators help determine carbon footprints for your home, air travels, food and recycling use.

    • 2

Select a carbon offset program. Choose a reputable organization such as TerraPass, Carbon Footprint or Native Energy. Prices will range from $5 to $100 per metric ton. Check that the company has its finances audited and is certified by Green-e, The Gold Standard, Voluntary Carbon Standard, Client Community and Biodiversity Standards, Environmental Resources Trust or another reputable organization.

    • 3

Pay for the offset. Then, investigate ways to save money next year such as buying a new hybrid or more fuel-efficient vehicle or driving less to reduce your mileage and carbon emissions.
