How to Calculate Air Force Reserve Retirement

It's never too early to estimate your Air Force Reserve retirement pay. Fortunately, the requirements for each of the two main retirement programs are fairly straightforward. You must have at least 20 years of qualifying Reserve work and you must be at least 60 years old to start collecting benefits. If your date of entry into service was before Sept. 8, 1980, you will qualify for the Final Pay Plan. If your date of entry was on or after that date, you'll receive High 36 benefits.

Instructions

  1. Final Pay Plan

    • 1

Determine your qualifying years of Reserve work. One qualifying year of service equals one complete retirement year in which you earned 50 or more retirement points.

    • 2

Multiply your years of work by 2.5 and write this number as a percentage---this becomes your retirement multiplier, which represents the percentage of your salary you will receive in retirement.

    • 3

Multiply your retirement multiplier by your final pay at the end of your Reserve career. This will be your retirement salary.

    High 36

    • 4

Determine your qualifying years of work by adding up the number of working years in which you earned 50 or more retirement points.

    • 5

Multiply your years of work by 2.5 and write this number as a percentage---this becomes your retirement multiplier, which represents the percentage of your salary you will receive in retirement.

    • 6

Add up your income during your highest-paid 36 months of Reserve work.

    • 7

Divide this number by 36 to find your average basic pay.

    • 8

Multiply your retirement multiplier percentage by your average basic pay to determine your retirement salary.

Tips & Warnings

  • These instructions don't factor in annual cost of living adjustments. Your retired pay, however, will take into account changes in cost of living---meaning you may receive more in benefits than you've calculated due to increases in the price of goods and services. If you have incurred a disability during service, you may apply for disability retirement, for which pay is determined in the same ways above depending on your date of entry into service.
